A group of seven alleged individuals of German far-left group stand trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist group together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was behind targeting sites in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M., are additionally accused for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and urged the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat from the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or remain detained.”
