European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
