The fast bowler Set to Play a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector the selector has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of taking part.

"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, not just the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. With luck from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
