Vladimir Kramnik has spoken out after the death of American grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky, describing the 29-year-old's loss as a tragedy while condemning critics for mounting what he termed an "deeply cynical and illegal targeted harassment" against him and his family.
Former Champion's Response
The fifty-year-old ex-champion, who has faced widespread condemnation for accusing Naroditsky of online cheating lacking proof, expressed condolences but denied any personal attacks.
"Regardless of our differences, I was the sole individual in the chess community who, noticing on video Daniel's obvious health issues a day before his death, publicly called for him to receive help," Kramnik stated. "The subsequent attempts, immediately following his passing, to directly link this tragic event to my name … violate every limit of basic human morality."
Kramnik said his earlier requests for examination of Naroditsky's digital games had been overlooked "even with substantial proof", and stated he would provide material to "appropriate officials". He mentioned his lawyers were drafting civil and criminal suits over "false accusations" that have resulted in dangers against him and his family.
Police Findings
The demise of the grandmaster may have been the result of a drug overdose and is being investigated as a possible suicide, based on a police report released Thursday. A statement from Charlotte authorities indicates Naroditsky was found dead Sunday evening and describes the case as a "Death/suicide/overdose/Sudden/Natural Death Investigation."
"On Sunday October 19th at approximately 07:11pm, officers answered an assist medic call in the area of 9000 Colin Crossing," the document states. "When they reached the scene, an unresponsive subject was located and later pronounced deceased by a medical professional."
Community Reaction
Anger over Kramnik's conduct has dominated the chess world. Hikaru Nakamura described his actions "appalling", while five-time world champion Carlsen described it as "terrible". Indian grandmaster Nihal Sarin, who faced Naroditsky in his last digital game, accused Kramnik of "taking a life", saying his vigilante campaign against alleged rule-breakers was ineffective and "totally inappropriate".
Naroditsky's Legacy
A Stanford-educated prodigy and former world youth champion, Naroditsky gathered more than 800k fans on streaming platforms. Known as Danya, he was praised for his humor, clarity and humility, becoming a prominent figure in chess's COVID-period surge. He was also one of the world's finest players under shorter time controls, placing ninth at last year's blitz world championship in New York.
Naroditsky consistently denied the allegations but admitted the impact they had taken on his mental health. "Since the Kramnik controversy, I feel like if I start doing well, people assume the worst," Naroditsky remarked in his final livestream.
Organizational Statements
The World Chess Federation said this week it was "investigating" Kramnik's actions. "Kramnik's methodology simply is unacceptable," Fide chief executive Emil Sutovsky commented. The federation plans to honor Naroditsky with a tribute prize.
Federation president Arkady Dvorkovich later confirmed that all of Kramnik's official remarks about Naroditsky, prior to and following his passing, would be submitted to the organisation's Ethics and Disciplinary Commission "to be reviewed independently".
"Human life and dignity are core principles shared by all of us," Dvorkovich stressed. "The chess community has long respected the accomplishments of GM Vladimir Kramnik, but such status brings a responsibility to uphold the principles of fairness and respect."
Family's Hope
Naroditsky's relatives have said they wish he is recalled not because of the hostility he endured but for "the joy and inspiration he provided others every day". Carlsen called him "an asset to chess", while Nakamura described him as "among the finest".
